Calculate gravel volume for driveways, bases, paths and landscaping from length, width and depth. Add extra allowance and estimate weight from an adjustable bulk density.

How much gravel do I need?

Measure the area length and width, then enter the compacted or planned depth. Calcavera calculates rectangular gravel volume and adds the allowance you select. Results can be shown in cubic meters, cubic feet or cubic yards.

Gravel depth and volume

Depth has a direct effect on material volume. Doubling the depth doubles the theoretical volume for the same area. Use the project specification for base thickness rather than choosing a depth only to reduce material quantity.

Estimate gravel weight

The weight estimate uses the bulk density you enter. Gravel density varies with stone type, grading, moisture, voids and compaction, so use a supplier value whenever possible before ordering by weight.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate how much gravel I need?
Multiply length × width × depth after converting the measurements to compatible units, then add an allowance if needed. Calcavera performs these conversions automatically.
How many cubic yards of gravel do I need?
Choose cubic yards as the result unit. The calculator converts the entered area and depth into the corresponding purchase volume.
How does gravel depth affect quantity?
For the same surface area, volume changes directly with depth. A layer twice as deep requires twice the theoretical volume.
Is the gravel weight estimate exact?
No. It depends on the bulk density entered. Material type, moisture and compaction can change actual weight, so supplier data is preferable.
What does Gravel Calculator calculate?
The calculator uses the measurements and values you enter and applies a defined deterministic formula. Change the inputs and the result is calculated again from those values.
Can I save this calculation to a project?
Yes. After calculating, use “Add to my project estimate” to save the result in your current Calcavera project estimate. You can repeat this with other calculators to build a multi-item project.
Can I print or save the estimate as a PDF?
Yes. Open the saved project estimate, then use the “Print / Save PDF” button. Your browser can print the estimate or save it as a PDF file.
Can I use metric and imperial units?
Yes. Where supported by the calculator, you can mix common metric and imperial input units. Calcavera converts measurements before running the calculation and shows the selected output unit.
Are the cost figures a contractor quote?
No. Cost ranges are planning estimates and appear only when an active market rate is available. Supplier pricing, labor, taxes, delivery, specifications and site conditions can change the final cost.
