Calculate pipe volume and internal capacity from inside diameter, length and quantity. Convert results to liters, gallons, cubic feet or cubic meters.

How to calculate pipe volume

Pipe capacity is the internal volume of a cylinder. Use the inside diameter, convert it to a radius, then apply V = π × r² × length. Calcavera performs the unit conversions automatically.

Inside diameter matters

Nominal pipe size and outside diameter are not always the same as the usable inside diameter. For water volume, tank fill calculations and fluid capacity, use the actual inside diameter from the pipe specification whenever possible.

Common uses

This pipe volume calculator can help estimate water capacity in straight pipe runs, compare pipe sizes, plan flushing or filling volumes, and convert pipe capacity between liters, US gallons, UK gallons, cubic feet and cubic meters.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the volume of a pipe?
Use the internal cylinder formula V = π × r² × length, where r is half of the inside diameter. Calcavera converts the selected diameter and length units before applying the formula.
Should I use inside diameter or outside diameter?
Use inside diameter when calculating fluid capacity. Outside diameter includes the pipe wall and will overstate the usable internal volume.
How many liters of water fit in a pipe?
Enter the pipe inside diameter and length, choose liters as the output unit, and the calculator returns the internal capacity. For multiple equal pipe sections, increase the quantity.
Can I calculate pipe volume in gallons?
Yes. Select US gallons or UK gallons as the output unit. The same internal volume is converted to the selected gallon standard.
What does Pipe Volume & Capacity Calculator calculate?
The calculator uses the measurements and values you enter and applies a defined deterministic formula. Change the inputs and the result is calculated again from those values.
Can I save this calculation to a project?
Yes. After calculating, use “Add to my project estimate” to save the result in your current Calcavera project estimate. You can repeat this with other calculators to build a multi-item project.
Can I print or save the estimate as a PDF?
Yes. Open the saved project estimate, then use the “Print / Save PDF” button. Your browser can print the estimate or save it as a PDF file.
Can I use metric and imperial units?
Yes. Where supported by the calculator, you can mix common metric and imperial input units. Calcavera converts measurements before running the calculation and shows the selected output unit.
Are the cost figures a contractor quote?
No. Cost ranges are planning estimates and appear only when an active market rate is available. Supplier pricing, labor, taxes, delivery, specifications and site conditions can change the final cost.
