Estimate rebar quantity for a rectangular slab from slab size, bar spacing, edge cover and bar diameter. Calculate bar lines, total length and approximate steel weight.

Rebar quantity for a slab

This rebar calculator estimates reinforcement quantity for a rectangular slab using two perpendicular bar directions. Enter the slab length and width, bar spacing, edge cover and bar diameter to estimate total rebar length, approximate bar lines and steel weight.

How spacing changes rebar quantity

Closer spacing increases the number of bars crossing the slab. The calculator applies the entered spacing across the usable dimensions after edge cover. It is a quantity estimator only: bar spacing, diameter, laps, anchorage and reinforcement design must follow the project drawings, engineer requirements and applicable code.

Rebar weight estimate

Approximate weight is derived from nominal bar diameter and total calculated length. Use supplier schedules or project bar lists for procurement when exact bar sizes, laps, hooks, chairs, starter bars or multiple reinforcement layers are required.

Frequently asked questions

How much rebar do I need for a concrete slab?
Enter the slab dimensions, bar spacing and edge cover. The calculator counts bar lines in both directions, totals their length and applies the selected waste allowance.
Does smaller rebar spacing use more steel?
Yes. Reducing spacing generally increases the number of bar lines and therefore total rebar length. The required spacing must come from the structural design, not from the calculator.
Does the calculator include rebar laps and hooks?
Not individually. Use the waste allowance only for planning and follow the project reinforcement schedule for required laps, hooks, anchorage and detailing.
Is the rebar weight exact?
It is an approximate planning weight based on nominal diameter and calculated length. Supplier or engineering bar schedules should be used for final procurement.
What does Rebar Calculator calculate?
The calculator uses the measurements and values you enter and applies a defined deterministic formula. Change the inputs and the result is calculated again from those values.
Can I save this calculation to a project?
Yes. After calculating, use “Add to my project estimate” to save the result in your current Calcavera project estimate. You can repeat this with other calculators to build a multi-item project.
Can I print or save the estimate as a PDF?
Yes. Open the saved project estimate, then use the “Print / Save PDF” button. Your browser can print the estimate or save it as a PDF file.
Can I use metric and imperial units?
Yes. Where supported by the calculator, you can mix common metric and imperial input units. Calcavera converts measurements before running the calculation and shows the selected output unit.
Are the cost figures a contractor quote?
No. Cost ranges are planning estimates and appear only when an active market rate is available. Supplier pricing, labor, taxes, delivery, specifications and site conditions can change the final cost.
